Laser Engraved Titanium

Laser engraving and etching on titanium is one of the most fascinating and visually stunning applications in the entire laser processing industry. Titanium is prized across the aerospace, medical, automotive, and high-end jewelry sectors for its incredible strength-to-weight ratio and biocompatibility.

When subjected to a laser, titanium behaves unlike almost any other metal. It allows engineers and artists to not only cut deep grooves but also "paint" the metal with a spectrum of vibrant colors without using any inks or dyes.

Engraving vs. Etching vs. Coloring Titanium:

Depending on your laser settings, you can achieve three entirely distinct results on titanium:

Laser Etching (Surface Marking): The laser melts a microscopic top layer of the titanium. As it refreezes, it alters the surface texture, creating a high-contrast, usually frosted white or dark grey mark. This is highly efficient for fast asset tracking, serial numbers, and 2D data matrix codes.

Laser Engraving (Deep Ablation): High-power, repeated laser passes physically vaporize the titanium, digging deep into the metal. Because titanium is incredibly tough, deep engraving requires high peak power, but it produces highly durable, permanent cavities that withstand extreme wear, sandblasting, and chemical exposure.

Laser Coloring (Anodization/Annealing): This is the crown jewel of titanium laser processing. By carefully controlling the laser’s heat, you can grow a highly controlled oxide layer on the surface of the metal. This transparent layer refracts light at different angles, creating brilliant, permanent colors—including blues, golds, purples, and greens—without any chemical baths, dyes, or pigments. Laser coloring is made possible by using a MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) laser.
